Santa Claus Is Coming To Burtonsville - 12/11/11

Santa is now making his annual tour of Burtonsville and the surrounding communities in the BVFD's restored 1952 Chevrolet pumper truck. With Mother Nature's cooperation, we will once again do our best to visit our entire response area. Of course, staffing fire trucks and ambulances always comes first, and Santa's crew is mostly made up of active BVFD fire and EMS personnel. So please understand if emergency calls cause changes to the tentative schedule, which appears below.

BVFD Open House, Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 - 10/22/11

Our Annual Open House is coming up on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 12 PM to 4 PM. Please bring your kids of all ages for a fun and educational experience. This year, we will have displays and demonstrations featuring many types of fire rescue services, police specialty units, a live rescue squad vehicle extrication demo at 3pm (think "Jaws of Life"), and fun activities for all ages to participate in. Of course, you will be able to see, touch, and learn about all of our high-tech fire, rescue, and emergency medical services equipment, including our Rescue Squad 15!

Thank you for supporting the BVFD 21st Annual Carnival - September 13-18 - 09/13/11
NEW DATES DUE TO RAIN - The carnival will now run Tuesday-Sunday 9/13-18.

The Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce that we will be holding our 21st annual carnival this year on September 13-18. For the 3rd year we are returning to Route 198 at Star Point Drive, which is just one block east of Route 29. The carnival opens up every night at 6:30 and is open until 10pm each week night and until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. We also are open 1-8PM on Sunday 9/18.

Be sure that you come on Family Nights where each child can ride unlimited rides all night for one low fee. The family nights are Tuesday 9/13, Wednesday 9/14, Thursday 9/15, and Sunday 9/18. All other nights will be regular price for rides. Also please be sure to stop by our famous BVFD food booth for some tasty hot off of the grill food.

Fire Showing off New Hampshire Ave - 07/01/11

The Engine and Ladder Truck responded to a two alarm fire off of New Hampshire Ave this afternoon. Units arrived on the scene with fire showing. Engine 724, 715, and Truck 715 made quick work of the fire, and had the fire extinguished quickly.

First Due House Fire - 06/10/11

Units from the Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched for a house on fire with possible people inside yesterday evening. Units arrived to find fire on every floor and through the roof. Personnel were very aggressive in their attack on the fire, and luckily everyone evacuated the building prior to our arrival. Despite the sweltering heat of the day, personnel were able to quickly extinguish the fire that had quickly spread throughout the house.

New Report Shows Fire/Rescue Volunteers Save Montgomery County Tens of Millions of Dollars Annually - 04/06/11

Volunteers Essential to Providing Cost-Effective Public Safety

A new report shows that highly trained and skilled volunteer firefighters, EMTs and paramedics save Montgomery County taxpayers more than $23 million in salary and benefit costs each year, while the local volunteer fire and rescue departments save millions of additional dollars through the purchase of vehicles and equipment and the use of fire stations that are owned by the Departments. "This report demonstrates how fire and rescue volunteers are essential to providing cost-effective public safety in Montgomery County," said Marcine D. Goodloe, President of the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire-Rescue Association, which compiled the report. "Without the commitment and service of volunteers, County taxpayers would pay tens of millions of dollars in additional taxes or the level of fire/rescue service would need to be drastically reduced," Goodloe added.

The report documents the savings from volunteers in three major areas: (1) salaries and benefits, (2) vehicles and equipment, and (3) operation of fire/rescue stations. According to the report:

• Today 865 highly trained, certified, qualified and riding volunteers working hand-in-hand in a unique partnership with 1,038 County career firefighters, risk serious injury and death on a daily basis to help save lives and serve the public safety interests of the County. These individuals save the County an estimated $23.2 million in salary and benefit costs each year. An additional 626 volunteers are trainees/candidates in the process of completing their fire/rescue classes and are riding apparatus but as additional staffing positions.
• The volunteer departments save the County at least $2.4 million by providing firefighter gear, apparatus, equipment, and maintenance of facilities through community fundraising efforts. Replacement value for LFRD provided firefighter equipment and apparatus is over $25 million.
• Millions of dollars annually in rent free use of LFRD facilities (buildings and land).

"The report is thoroughly researched and more than adequately sourced," said Grant Davies, a member of the board of directors at the Bethesda Fire Department and lead author of the report. "It demonstrates, through hard data, that the volunteers are absolutely essential to the County's fire/rescue system," Davies noted.

While the report documents the cost savings in three major areas, Goodloe noted that the volunteers provide other essential services. "Volunteers provide 'surge' capacity during critical emergencies, such as during the recent grassfires throughout the County and this winter's numerous storms," said Goodloe. "While it's difficult to put a dollar value on the benefit of having dozens of trained and certified volunteer firefighters, paramedics and EMTs able to staff extra apparatus during major emergencies, we know it makes a major difference for County residents and is one of the reasons for the public's broad support for the fire/rescue system in the County.

BVFD Cheeburger Cheeburger Fundraiser - Thursday 3/10 - All Day - 03/10/11

The BVFD Auxiliary will be conducting our annual Cheeburger Cheeburger fundraiser Thurdsay 3/10 at the Burtonsville Crossing Shopping Center location (route 198 and old route 29). Please print this flyer and show it to your waitress and Cheeburger Cheeburger will donate 20% of all sales for both eat in and take out. We are told that they will accept the flyer ALL DAY, and not just from 5-9PM as indicated on the flyer. We are very greatful to Cheeburger Cheeburger for their continued support of the BVFD. The BVFD Wishes to Express Our Condolences to the Family and Friends of F/F Mark G. Falkenhan - 01/19/11

The BVFD wishes to express our condolences to the family, friends and fellow firefighters of F/F Mark G. Falkenhan of the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Department in Baltimore County. F/F Falkenhan died this evening after becoming trapped and calling a mayday in a residential apartment fire and suffering severe burns. F/F Falkenhan was also an Instructor with the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute. He leaves behind his wife and two sons.

House Fire - 3100 block Gershwin Lane - 01/13/11

This evening Burtonsville units were dispatched for a house fire in the 3100 block of Gershwin Lane. Members found a room and contents on the second floor. Fire was confined to same with no extension.

House Fire - 3300 block of Kilkenny Street - 12/31/10

Burtonsville units were dispatched just before 2000 hours for a report of smoke coming from the house in the 3300 block of Kilkenny Street. Rescue Squad 715 arrived on the scene and reported fire showing from the first and second floor of a two story detached house. Truck 715 went to work opening up while the squad crew began a primary search. The fire originated on the first floor, with extension to second floor and attic. The fire was knocked down quickly and units went to work opening the concealed spaces and knocking the fire down on the second floor and attic. Primary and secondary searches were completed with negative results. A rapid intervention dispatch was requested to assist.

One Pinned - Beltsville Drive and Powdermill Road - 12/19/10
At 0537 hours, Rescue Squad 715 was dispatched for motor vehicle accident at Beltsville Drive and Powdermill Road. The rescue squad arrived on the scene with units from Station 841 and found one occupant pinned in the vehicle. The occupant was removed after a lengthy extrication and transported to area trauma center.

Truck 715 Operates at Garden Apartment Fire at 3234 Spartan Road - 12/11/10
Initially units were dispatched for a report of natural gas leak at 3234 Spartan Road. Units arrived on the scene and found a working fire in a three story garden apartment. The box alarm assignment was filled and then a rapid intervention dispatch and a task force were requested to assist. First arriving units found fire on the second and third floor of the apartment building. There was significant extension into the concealed spaces. Truck 715 responded on the task force and operated on both floors.

Truck and Rescue Squad Operate at Townhouse Fire - Farmcrest Court - 12/10/10

Units were dispatched for a reported townhouse fire in the 14500 block of Farmcrest Court. Units arrived on the scene to find fire showing from the first floor of a two story, middle of the row townhouse. The fire was knocked down quickly and confined to the area of involvement on arrival. A rapid intervention dispatch and a task force was requested in addition to the original box alarm.

Live-In Members Take Night Off to Celebrate Christmas Holiday Dinner - 12/10/10

17 Live-In members took the night off and headed to Sole D'Italia Restaurant in Ashton for a night of good food and company. The live-in membership makes this a regular occurance to go out as a group in order to keep the already tight bonds together. Please keep in mind during the holiday season that Live-In Firefighter Marquet Johnson is currently at United States Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. A special thanks to the members who came in to staff the station while the live-ins were out. The crews that remained in quarters went to a townhouse fire in Company 24's first due as well.
