BVFD Mourns Loss of Chief Charlie Snyder

03/01/09

Chief Charles D. Snyder 1930 - 2009

It is with great saddness, and a deep sense of personal loss, that I must announce the passing of Chief Charles D. Snyder. Chief Snyder died in in the early hours of Saturday, February 28, 2009. Chief Synder leaves his wife Doris, son Danny, daughter Bonita, and his sister Mrs. Barbara Bergere (who faithfully served our Department for 30 years herself, prior to Ms. Yetter).

Chief Snyder joined the BVFD as soon as he turned 18, in 1948. In the years that followed, he became a legend and a huge part of our Department's history. In the late 1950's he was the Captain of the Rescue Squad. By 1961 he had achieved the rank of Assistant Chief. In 1962, he was cited for herorism after saving a 15 year old girl involved in a car crash. He went on serve as our Fire Chief (1965-1966, 1968-1972, and 1980-1982) and our President (1974-1976, 1979) and held an executive leadership role for over 16 years.
